The Honey Bee Solution to Varroa by Steve Riley
The Honey Bee Solution to Varroa is a book about the Westerham Beekeepers’ project to identify and select for varroa-resistant traits in their colonies. The book won a silver medal at Apimondia 2025 in Copenhagen.
The genesis of the project was a series of lectures by Dr Ralph Büchler at Gormanston, Ireland. That autumn, founder beekeepers Alban, Annie, Jacky, Keith, Mark, Steve R and Topsy met in the Carpenters Arms, Limpsfield, and the project was born.
By the autumn of 2025, there were over 160 colonies in the project and growing, aided by a breeding apiary set up to produce varroa-resistant bees.
The book is available in English or Dutch from Northern Bee Books or Amazon. There is a club members’ discounted price of £20 directly from the author. It is also available in German from Haupt Publishing. All royalties go to Bees for Development.
